I’m Alanah, founder of Light Social. I moved from the corporate world to setting up my own business via Digital Mums. Now, with my a couple of years of trading under my belt, it feels like the right time to reflect on what I’ve learned.
A couple of realisations led me to choose the direction and focus of my business. Firstly, my son was using our iPad and I could see how his would easily become an influential part of his future. Whether or not we think it’s healthy, our future is online and everything we do will be influenced and facilitated digitally to some degree.
Secondly, our demands on our planet are extreme to say the least and I feel very strongly about trying to reduce our carbon footprint and reuse or recycle wherever possible. I’m therefore a big fan of unique, handmade products which help with this cause – think about the sort of businesses you find on Etsy and you’ll know what I mean.
Finding my Focus
Throughout my corporate career, I always seemed to fall into the role of trainer. Maybe because I was an early adopter of ideas, I would often end up helping the rest of the team grasp a new concept or learn how to use a new technology platform.
Digital Mums’ training is designed to create social media managers, but I felt very inspired by the creativity and planning that goes into running a successful social media profile. The events of 2020 have pushed us further online and I’ve seen so many businesses change over the past six to nine months. That’s made me even more determined to help business owners to make themselves heard.
I’m particularly proud of how the UK is such a thriving small business community, in fact those with under 50 employees make up 99.3% of the total business population. As a working mum I can identify with the need for mums to get out of the rat race and start a business that echoes a particular joy or skill.
These things have led to Light Social focusing on training business owners to get the most they can out of their social media channels.
I want people who have started their own business, like me, to realise that social media isn’t as scary or overwhelming as they might think. Perhaps it’s the trainer in me but I always break things down into bite-sized chunks. Getting a good plan in place will make the task ahead feel achievable, no matter its size.
Before lockdown, I regularly ran training courses designed to help small business owners get the most out of social media platforms and how to identify content ideas and plan their post. This training is continuing online, and I suspect there will be an increasing number of businesses springing up as a result of recent life changes.

I pride myself on Light Social being an approachable and friendly business. I might have a personal preference for crafty businesses, but I help anyone who wants to be more successful on social.
Here are some pointers to follow if reading my blog has resonated with you:
- You don’t need to be posting hundreds of times a day, or even every day, but getting your content right will make all the difference.
- It’s important to invest the right amount of time on your social media. By this, I mean focus on the planning and everything else will feel quicker and less laborious. If you try to post on an ad-hoc, unplanned basis, you’ll quickly find your social activity will fall to the bottom of your to-do list.
- Just because you choose to run a business doesn’t mean you know your way around a content scheduler or understand which channel you should focus on and why. Seek help from someone who does.
